2.9 Hidden in Plain Sight

Shortly after the wedding, it's snowflake day! Marko throws a gift-giving party and invites the usual crowd.

Persis wonders what's so funny about Tulip's skirt. She thinks her daughter is quite nicely dressed and does not warrant this party guest's ridicule.

The stereo then proceeds to break down for no reason, pulling Persis out of her thoughts. She scoffs at the sparking appliance; her days as the home repairwoman are long over. Paolo can take care of that.

The present opening commences. Tulip is placed next to her namesake, Tula. Tula doesn't really care about this hubbub with the colourful boxes. Her toy, Guy, is much more interesting.

Tulip looks at her niece, surprised by just how much she looks like Paolo. There's no hint of resemblance to Krista, or any of the other Parrotts. Probably a good thing, too. The less she's tied to those guys, the better.

A disturbing thought occurs to her. They might recruit her when she's older... it would make sense, after all. Aside from Pablo and Krista, the other Parrott children have yet to reproduce. To keep the family business running, the Parrott descendants of Tula's generation would have to be inducted into the criminal scene. And they'll try to make her one of them...

Tulip looks away guiltily at the thought of her sister-in-law's criminal family. Tula may be apart of the Parrott family by blood... but she's still Tulip's niece. She owes it to Tula to try and stop this madness before it's too late.

Tulip narrows her eyes at her now brother-in-law lurking in the party. Marko still insists (for some reason) that all family be invited to their get-togethers. He doesn't meet her gaze, but he must know she's there.

And Paolo, ever so oblivious to the tension, claps happily after opening his present. A chess table! Too bad the house doesn't have space for it.

Krista makes her displeasure towards her brother's appearance known.

Pablo doesn't even flinch. She can boo and hiss all she wants, at the end of the day he's still her boss, and she still makes those gadgets and knick-knacks for him

Tulip watches the scene intently. Krista quickly falls back into a more neutral stance and Pablo claps her on the shoulder.

"Tired of me already, sis?" Pablo says. Krista smiles weakly at him, but doesn't retort.

The urge to butt in burns within Tulip. She'd love nothing more than to see Pablo behind bars... but she has to wait. Evidence needs to be found. She can't hide her glowering. As soon as she finds anything, Pablo is going down

Her absolute loathing for Pablo distracts her so completely, that she doesn't hear one of the Bedlington sons make a jab about Xara's quick procession of romantic partners after their father. Had she noticed, the rest of the party might not have gone so...smoothly.

Xara, on the other hand, hears the insult loud and clear. She fights to keep her face expressionless. Bertram Bedlington was such an asshole. The only good thing that came from her fling with him was her son, Gregory. Her only regret about her current situation is that she's going to be tied to Bertram's family forever.

The gifts are eventually distributed among the guests, and from there the party winds down. All the guests trickle out until the Winterly household is once again solely occupied by its primary inhabitants.

Well, primary inhabitants +1.

2.8 Bells Are Ringing

Mmm, veggie burgers, Persis' favourite!

Krista finds it much easier to teach Tula how to walk rather than talk.

"You didn't get a picture of it?" Marko is disappointed in his wife who failed to capture the moment that their granddaughter took her first steps.

Persis shrugs, "Would a photo make the experience any more memorable?"

Marko harrumphs, "But with a photo we could show other people who weren't around to see it!"

"It's not like they won't see her walking later on, you know," Persis shoots back dryly, "Tula's a person, not a vacation you show off to your friends via photos."

Krista squirms in her seat. They're talking about her daughter, so she knows she should say something, but confrontation when not exceptionally cranky and pregnant makes her uncomfortable.

Neither Persis nor Marko notice Krista's uneasy shifting. "Then how about the emotional value? We could look at that photo and relive the happiness of seeing her walk for the first time," Marko argues.

"You have your memory for that."

Marko harrumphs again, "And when our memories fade?"

Persis smiles, "As much as I love debating with you, I have a garden to tend to before the snow sets in."

"You can't just leave an argument when you're bested! Wait, come back!" Marko calls after her. He shuffles out of his chair and follows her to their bedroom. Krista catches Persis rolling her eyes before she indulges Marko in some friendly bickering. Krista smiles; Paolo's parents are so cute.

Persis did have a point about the impending winter, though. Shortly after she weeds her plants, a thick blanket of snow descends on Appaloosa Plains.  Krista, who lived in a tropical city during her childhood, takes the opportunity to do what was denied to her for her entire childhood; build a snowman.

Paolo smiles at her as she seriously scrutinizes her snowman's base. This is too adorable.

"Need any help?" he asks over his shoulder.

"Shhhh, I can do it myself," she waves him off.

He laughs, "As you wish." He decides to clean up the old newspapers in the yard, suppressing a smile as Krista remolds the base snowball over and over again, muttering to herself.

"If you shave any more snow off of it, it's not going to be large enough to support the rest of the snowman," Paolo advises. Krista looks down in surprise, then sighs. She was so concerned about the roundness of the snowball, that she forgot that she would have to put two more on top of it.

"...want to help me out?" she says, flashing a devious smile.

"Well, when you ask so nicely..."

The next morning, long after their snowman is standing proudly in the yard, Paolo sets to fixing the stereo before work. He just manages to turn it on to test the repairs when his ride to work honks outside.

Tula received this gift in the mail from a great-uncle (or something). She plays with it constantly and seems very protective over it.

That is, when she's not twisting its head or slamming it against the floor. She has yet to learn how to carefully handle her toys.

That will have to wait, though; it's Krista and Paolo's wedding day! Lucia and Xara are here to help Krista put the finishing touches on her outfit.

"Having a winter wedding is such a romantic idea, seeing all the beautiful snow while you exchange your vows," Xara sighs.

"We didn't even think about that, honestly," Krista admits, "I just want to get it over with!" All of those eyes on her... all the picture taking people will want to do... why didn't they just have a private wedding?

"Oh, relax, it's your wedding day! It's all about you, savor it," Xara says with a smile, clapping Krista's shoulder. Krista does not feel reassured.

While Xara and Lucia Pelly-Fox help Krista get ready, Alaina Riffin, Krista's younger half-sister, nervously approaches Paolo.

"You look so handsome in your suit," she compliments. Before he can react, she whips out a bouquet of flowers.

"I know you've been with my sister for ages... but it's not too late for you to notice...other women," she says. Alaina has been admiring Paolo from afar since high school, always thinking one day her sister and the Winterly boy would split up. Then Krista got pregnant and moved in with him, and now they're getting married! Alaina doesn't see any other opportunity to express her feelings... maybe he only stayed with Krista because of the baby, or because he didn't know he had any other options.

Paolo clears his throat uncomfortably as he tries to think of what to say. Alaina can see his answer long before he speaks, his discomfort clear in his eyes.

"I'm flattered, but I love Krista. Besides, I think I'm a bit too old for you," he tries to joke. Alaina was born shortly before Paolo entered high school, causing quite a large age gap between them. Alaina is practically barely out of high school while his daughter is already a toddler!

Alaina withdraws her flowers and gives him a thin smile. "Yes, of course... I hope you two are happy together."

After Krista is fully prepped, she comes out for the wedding kiss. No one is actually facing them while they do this, much to Krista's relief.

Uh guys, I think that's enough...

They share their first dance together as a married couple.

"Now that wasn't so bad, was it?" Paolo says with a smirk.

Krista laughs, "I'm still glad it's over."

Paolo laughs with her, silently agreeing. He would've been just fine with a private wedding at City Hall, but his father would probably have been distressingly upset had they not had a party.

Speaking of his father...

Marko completely bypasses a greeting when he finally gets around to seeing Xara. "Do you have any pictures of Gregory?"

Xara grins, "Of course I do! Just let me get my phone..." Xara has predictably taken many photos of her son who is now a toddler. His hair hasn't grown out yet, but the light fuzz on his head is bright blue.

While he waits, Marko glances at Tulip, dancing with Hubert Fox. He was surprised at her marriage to Rodney Singleton, less because of his advanced age and more because of her unerring commitment to her job. He remembers when she was telling him she didn't have time even for a date! And now here she is, married and going to parties.

After their formal dance, Krista and Paolo "let loose", i.e. flail their limbs around half-heartedly because they have no idea what they're doing. Xara feels physical pain just looking at it.

"I feel like people are staring at us," Krista whispers, cheeks burning with embarrassment.

"Only because of our amazing dance moves," Paolo answers, wiggling his shoulders. Even more heat shoots into Krista's face.

"Paolo!"

He ignores her protests and methodically shakes his limbs.

"Oh plumbbob, what are they doing?" Xara sighs to Tulip and Hubert. It's like Paolo's trying to embarrass their family!

Eventually the awkward dancing stops to make room for Tulip and Hubert's epic skills. He calls this one "the back breaker".

They are perfectly in synch.

"Where did you learn to dance?" Hubert asks Tulip. He's always imagined her as being a straight-laced cop, so her ability to not just keep up with him but outpace him is surprising.

"My sister," she admits shamelessly. While they no longer live in the same house after her marriage, Tulip has been to several of Xara's get-togethers with other musicians. You can't be my sister and not dance, Xara had told her. So at these gatherings Xara coaxed out Tulip's "inner dancer", and now she can fend for herself at parties.

"And how about you, Mr. Council Member?" Tulip turns the conversation to Hubert. Hubert's mother, Chayenne Fox, was the city mayor for most of Tulip's childhood and it seems her son has followed in her footsteps.

Hubert shrugs, "You have to dance at parties, even the boring stuffy ones with other politicians. I dance solely for survival."

Tulip scoffs. She can hardly imagine Appaloosa Plain's political elite doing the "back breaker". But she feels she's questioned Hubert enough already, and continues to dance the night away with him.

2.7 Live a Little

"Fish live in schools. You're going to go to school one day... uhm..." Krista isn't really sure how this "teaching to talk" thing works. Do you just blather at the kid and hope they absorb your vocabulary via osmosis? She doesn't think it's really working.

After her "lesson" with Tula, Krista guiltily savors Paolo's cheesesteak. It's her favourite food, but since beginning high school, way back when she still lived in Isla Paradiso, she's tried to stick with being a vegetarian.

She feels a bit nauseous after finishing it, either from a placebo effect or because her body's not used to meat anymore, and regrets breaking her long streak of vegetarianism.

She looks back at the fridge with a sigh. Paolo made enough to feed at least eight people...

Persis takes an early morning walk. It's spring, meaning lower temperatures. She enjoys the brisk air, but sighs as she walks on the frosty fields. She's not going to get to garden for a while after this...

Paolo bakes pumpkin pie, his father's favourite food, as thank you for looking after Tula during the day.

Even though no one is in the kitchen to see it, he finishes the pie off with a dramatic flourish. It improves the food's quality... somehow. Well, at least that's what he tells people.

Marko immediately digs into the pie, dressed like...this.

It might be because Krista's having a bachelorette party and the dress code is "impressive gear". Krista and her guests wore that nonsense for about two sim minutes before changing to formal wear.

Even though she didn't ask for any, some "adult entertainment" shows up anyways.

She doesn't know why they're wearing witch hats. Probably a joke from one of the party guests, but her supernatural skeptic trait just makes her roll her eyes. Pfft, magic.

How one remains skeptical to the supernatural when their future sister-in-law is a known vampire is anyone's guess.

Krista is already wishing she were home where there's no loud music to shout over and free cheese plates.

Melissa Marshall climbs up onto the bar and starts dancing. Krista focuses on eating the absurdly expensive cheese she ordered for this party, somewhat successfully drowning out Melissa's drunken whoops and cheers to the party dancers.

Tulip has just been standing inoffensively this whole party, but she gets singled out by one of the dancers anyways.

"Hey, if you give me a little something, I could take a special request..."

Tulip smirks. "I don't make enough to give anyone a 'little something', and besides, I'm married." It's true, she's Tulip Winterly-Singleton now, married to Rodney Singleton. He's the father of her former classmate- and now fellow colleague at the police station- Roman Loveland. Roman is too polite and professional to point out that their families are quite intertwined with Xara also dating his uncle, Booker Singleton, but Tulip can sense how awkward he feels about it.

She feels no regrets about her marriage, but she's getting tired of having to justify it to people. She suspects one of the guests sent this speedo, witch hat-clad dancer over to her to entrap her and prove how flimsy her marriage is.

"Well, for someone as enticing as yourself, the 'little something' could be real 'little'," he seems to ignore her marital status and lowers his voice. Tulip guesses it's supposed to be seductive, but she just finds it funny. Is there anyone, even if they aren't a cop, who would fall for this?

"I don't want your 'little something', got it?"

Tulip goes to the bathroom to freshen up, but is instead ambushed by a bottle-wielding Krista. She can protest all she likes, but she still gets sprayed with nectar.

Tulip has never really had alcohol before, so the sticky nectar combined with the cocktails she had earlier easily pushes her into an intoxicated state. She looks around the room, wincing at the swimming sensation in her brain. The colours seem a brighter than before, but her vision doesn't so much pan around the room as it swings from point to point. She doesn't like this feeling.

"Ugh, I think it's time for me to go home," she groans, wiping the nectar off of her face. She feels her back pocket for her phone, but her fingers are too sticky to type properly.

Benney, who was a young adult when Tulip and Krista were toddlers, sighs at this tom foolery. She remembers all the partying she did at their age... only a few glasses and they're already giggling and tripping over themselves? Pathetic. She sighs as she takes Tulip's phone and calls Rodney to pick Tulip up. Looking after these fools is like babysitting.

With Tulip being driven home, Krista feels a bit out of place. She doesn't really know anyone else at her party; she actually didn't even want to have one, but caved at Xara's insistence that she should "live a little" before she ties the knot. Xara herself ended up not coming, a last minute work engagement coming up. Not wanting the rest of the party to be an entire waste, she tries to strike up conversation with Sheena Marshall, Pablo's girlfriend and the mother of two of his children.

"So how's work going?" Krista yells.

"What?"

"How's work going?"

"How's what going?"

"Work!"

"What?"

Krista sighs. Her temple throbs painfully, probably a result of the combination of being tipsy and the incredibly loud music. Time to go home.

Paolo is surprised to see Krista come home before the sun rises, given how bachelor/bachelorette parties usually go.

"Did you have fun?" he asks over his shoulder. Tula pouts a little at her dad's attention being diverted from her.

"Uh... I guess. It wasn't too bad."

Tula tugs on Paolo's sleeve. "House! House!" she repeats the word he has been trying to teach her for the past few hours.

Krista smiles. Staying at home probably would have been much more enjoyable than any party, she thinks as she watches Tula babble excitedly at Paolo, at least here there's someone to talk to.
